Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be welcomed by your guide and transferred to your lodge in Arusha. After settling in, enjoy a short introductory bird walk around the lodge grounds or nearby forest edges an excellent opportunity to spot your first Tanzanian species such as the Variable Sunbird, Bronze Mannikin, or African Paradise Flycatcher. Your evening includes a safari briefing and overnight stay at Park View Hotel.
Day 2: Birding in Arusha National Park
Today you’ll explore the lush and diverse Arusha National Park, which features montane forest, open savannah, and crater lakes. This full-day birding excursion offers the chance to see Hartlaub’s Turaco, Bar-tailed Trogon, Crowned Eagle, and various forest weavers and flycatchers. An optional canoe safari on Momella Lakes can offer close views of waterbirds including African Jacanas, Red-knobbed Coots, and various duck species. You’ll return to Arusha for your overnight stay.
Day 3: Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, head to Tarangire National Park, a landscape dominated by baobab trees and rich riverine vegetation. This park is a birding hotspot, known for its large flocks of Yellow-collared Lovebirds, colorful bee-eaters, hornbills, woodpeckers, and raptors such as Bateleur Eagles and Martial Eagles. The variety of habitats also supports barbets, kingfishers, and shrikes. Enjoy your overnight stay at Tarangire Osupuko Lodge or a similar lodge within the park’s vicinity
Day 4: Lake Manyara National Park
Today you’ll visit Lake Manyara National Park, famous for its diverse habitats and prolific birdlife. Along the lakeshore, expect to find large numbers of flamingos, pelicans, and storks, while the groundwater forest supports trogons, turacos, and forest flycatchers. The hot springs area and wetland edges offer chances to see unique species like the Three-banded Courser or Collared Palm Thrush. You’ll spend the night at Marera Valley Lodge, just outside the park.
Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater
Your birding adventure continues with a descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site teeming with wildlife and bird species. Look out for the impressive Kori Bustard, Ostrich, Crowned Cranes, and a variety of raptors such as the Augur Buzzard and Verreaux’s Eagle. Waterbirds congregate around seasonal pools and hippo-filled swamps, where you’ll enjoy a scenic picnic lunch. After a full day of birding, you’ll head to your lodge on the outer rim for overnight.
Day 6: Lake Natron
Today’s drive takes you to the starkly beautiful landscape of Lake Natron, one of the most important breeding grounds for lesser flamingos in East Africa. The alkaline lake and its surroundings support desert-adapted species such as Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse, Three-banded Plover, and African Spoonbill. A guided walk along the lake shore and a visit to nearby waterfalls offer additional birding and photography opportunities. You’ll spend the night at Maasai Giraffe Eco Lodge.
Day 7: Return to Arusha
After breakfast, enjoy a leisurely drive back to Arusha with multiple birding stops along the way. Depending on your route, you may visit a local bird sanctuary or forest edge for one last chance to spot some elusive species. Upon arrival in Arusha, you’ll be dropped off at the airport for your flight or enjoy one more overnight stay, marking the end of your remarkable birding journey through Tanzania.
